The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
