Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
