A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
