Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
